FUTURE PROOF
Branding -
2020 was certainly a year to remember… or to forget! Most businesses had to adapt to the world that was constantly changing around them. Working from home, online meetings, social distancing and lockdowns all had their part to play in creating a different approach to the way that we went about our daily lives.
From a design perspective, better online presence and new and inventive ways of marketing had a great impact on the creative that was produced in 2020 to help businesses of all sizes get through the pandemic. So, from what we learnt during last year, here we look at the Top 10 Graphic Design Trends that will have an impact on creative design during 2021.
1. Sustainability & Nature
2020 was a year in which many of us got to enjoy the great outdoors. For a while we got used to skies being free from planes, roads being free of cars and for a short period of time we had a glimpse of what a greener planet may look like. This increased exposure to nature means that 2021 will see greener designs, whether it may be earthy colour palettes; leafy, floral or plant-
2. Retro
Last year gave us all the opportunity to look back at what seemed like a simpler period of time. This feeling of nostalgia has migrated into design through the use of colour and fonts. Vintage style illustrations and pop art, although never having gone away, will see some resurgence in their use within Graphic Design.
3. Optimism
The pandemic and the introduction of a new vaccine has given way to a wave of optimism. Creativity will need to be a big part of this, working with playful designs alongside colourful and vibrant patterns. Graphic Design will need to be both positive and uplifting.
4. Authenticity
2020 saw a back-
5. Muted Colours
Following last year’s chaos, consumers want a return to colours that are more natural, safe and calm. The current trend for brighter neon colours will be mixed with white or black with resulting hues that take the edge off their intensity.
6. Minimalism
The pandemic has meant a shift in design styles that are more minimalistic due to the fact that consumers have less time to browse or make decisions due to local restrictions that affect retail, travel and information. Landing pages, social posts, advertising and signage will all see an increase in ‘white space’ to ensure the viewer can clearly see the message that is being conveyed.
7. Data Visualisation
Communication through data visualisation will become simpler, relating back to the last point on ‘minimalism’ that is starting to appear more in Graphic Design. Viewers need to absorb information quickly and therefore facts and figures need to be communicated through a simple data graphic. Muted colours combined with uncomplicated visuals will help to replace complex raw data.
8. Icons
Flat icons are making a return following a few years of their 3D counterparts being the chosen format. In a period of time where simple but effective messaging is key, icons will play an important role in 2021 whether it be through digital or print formats.
9. Classic Serif Fonts
I talked earlier about nostalgia and trust and these qualities will see a return to the classic serif fonts which help to evoke these feelings. Although not as easy on the eye as sans-
10. Overlapping Shapes
Overlapping shapes tie into the minimalist trend that featured earlier. It allows elements to be grouped together resulting in sufficient white space to ensure maximum legibility.
In conclusion, last year resulted in a lot of negativity around the globe. The 2021 Graphic Design trends listed above will help rebuild some of the positivity required to move forward. By incorporating these principles into design and branding, businesses can help promote this positivity to their customers.
