Printing - Printing Trends & Innovations for 2020

Working on print design is only half of the equation. How the design is actually printed is equally as important. Therefore, it is essential to have a clear understanding of what the latest developments are in an ever-evolving print industry to make sure that when your work is printed, the quality is always at its very best. In this article we look at the top 10 printing trends for 2020.

1. Demand for Premium Print

With the reduction in high volumes of print, designers and marketing teams are now considering the value of print as a point of difference. Textures and finishes will feature strongly to engage with customers senses, along with new materials which use NFC (Near Field Communication) technology that works in conjunction with smart devices to automatically link to a website once the phone or tablet comes into contact with the paper.

2. Personalisation

The huge increase in the use of digital printing due to its speed and low cost has resulted in a greater demand for personalised printing. This trend is set to continue to grow in 2020 as printers try to achieve a sense of uniqueness with their print to engage with customers. With digital presses being able to deal with short runs and multiple versions of content, this has resulted in greater demand for items such as clothing, books and canvases.

3. Traditional Skills

Alongside the increase in digital printing, there is a new trend linking back to the traditional skills of the print industry. Techniques such as thermography (raised print that is baked), die cutting, foiling, embossing & de-bossing, calligraphy and other hand skills are continuing to work alongside new digital print technologies. This mixture of old and new works well to produce great print results.

4. Interactive Print

Augmented print adverts are becoming more commonplace and this trend will continue to grow in 2020. With the viewer seeing a printed advert through the screen of their smart device, the original advert disappears and a totally new digital advert springs to life. Printers are now embracing this technology to give a further dimension to advertising and marketing.

5. The ‘Leave Behind”

This trend has grown specifically from creative agency pitches. It allows for personalised invitations or finished print items such as books or leaflets to be easily and economically produced to “leave behind’ with the client to demonstrate the added value that the agency gives.

6. The Newsletter

Following GDPR, direct mail campaigns have had a resurgence in popularity. In a world of junk mail and spam, people actually enjoy receiving a piece of mail that isn’t a bill. This tactile experience has resulted in many businesses sending printed newsletters to their customer base. It is also a great way of encouraging new customers to sign up to your database.

7. Niche Publications

While larger magazines have struggled to hold onto their readership, smaller niche magazines are beginning to appear all the time. For marketeers this is an excellent opportunity to promote their business to a highly targeted group of consumers. A print advertisement in one of these publications can increase the odds of conversion dramatically.

8. Same Day & Next Day

As a consequence of the growth in online retailing, the consequence is that customers are now accustomed to receiving their goods instantly. The print industry has also followed this trend with lead times reducing from weeks down to days thanks mainly to advances in digital print. As the number of online orders grows, the shift in delivery times now looks like moving from next day to same day.

9. Fabrics & Biomaterials

In the print industry, popular materials such as PVC are now seen to have a huge impact on the environment. With common uses including banners, vinyls and wallpapers, it is non-recyclable and non-biodegradable. Countries are now beginning to ban the use of PVC which has meant that printers are now investigating the use of eco-alternatives such as polyester-based fabrics.

10. Print on Demand

Digital printing is now driving on-demand printing. There has been a significant rise in ‘web to print’ applications of the past few years and increasingly most printers are now moving over to these platforms to receive the majority of their business. Traditional print companies are now aiming to generate at least 50% of their sales through online orders to be able to compete with their rivals.

In a world where digital grows from strength to strength, print is still as important as ever and through these trends it will be around for many years to come.
