PRICELESS PICTURES

Photography - Retouching Can Be Costly

“You don’t take a photograph, you make it” – Ansel Adams

Never a truer word spoken, especially when you look at product photography. As with most things in life it is far more cost effective to get things right first time. Images are no different.  Poor or lazy photography will not only make your product look inferior if used but will also cost you more in retouching costs.  How many magazine covers featuring famous faces are so over worked that they cease to look like a real human being.  A retouch specialist can achieve a great deal, but not everything. Retouching is time consuming and costly. (For more information on Retouching click here)  A well-lit photo, with a nice crisp back ground, not full inadvertent reflections, crumpled display cloths or poor product placement, will save a great deal of time and money.

Photography is a broad art and it is important that the marketing team find a photographer who specialises in the area required.  Research is key. Check out the potential photographer’s other work and it is wise to request a brief trial when requiring a lot of photography. Having a simple trial photoshoot will help gauge the additional retouching work that might be involved to make your products stand out from the crowd.  Ensure that the photographer is clearly briefed and that someone knowledgeable is about to answer their questions. In that way, wasted shots can be avoided. After all, the purpose of any company is to make money through using photography, not to waste money having to get images heavily reworked.
